Engaging Collegial Learning Communities to Achieve Optimal Performance attended by Karen Loesch, Daniel Boone
Presenters: RoseAnne O'Brien Vojtek, Ph.D. and Robert J. Vojtek, Ph.D.
This workshop presented 10 Motivational Strategies to create efficient (optimal performance) PLCs. It is the presenters' belief that if any one of these keys is missing, a PLC will not be as efficient as it can be.
These 10 Strategies are:
Mission
Communication
Accountability
Empowerment
Autonomy
Competence & Capacity
Relationships
Interdependence
Results
If any one of these is missing, the following may result:
low moral
indifference
distrust
blame
constraint
dependence
ineptness
lonely, isolated, disconnected
lack of cooperation and mutual support
ambivalence
A key component of this workshop was role playing. Participants wore headbands labeled-smart, boss, comedian, etc... A task was given to the group and each member had to treat the other members according to the headband worn (participants did not know what "label" he/she had been given). In the end, each person tried to guess what label he/she had worn. Most participants easily identified the labels correctly. This exercise helped to illustrate that we often ignore, succomb, take over, etc... in our PLC based on what label we identify with ourselves and believe others are.
